Link to committee

With the Challenge Programme the Novo Nordisk Foundation wishes to contribute to the development and strengthening of the Danish research environment within biomedicine and biotechnology.

The goal of the Challenge Programme is to make substantial contributions to the funding needed for overcoming specific challenges in global health, technology and the environment. This programme is a strategic effort targeting specific challenges within a specific research theme.

Research themes 2017

For the application round of 2017, the Challenge Programme is seeking to support outstanding scientists working within the following two themes:

  • Big Data in Biomedicine
  • Design and Engineering of Biological Molecules and Systems

For both themes, the research must be in-depth, but the subject can be cross-disciplinary, and should not be considered limited to any particular research methodology or discipline.

The individual application should only focus on one of the two themes.

The Challenge Programme supports excellent scientists from 1-3 research groups, in addition to the main applicant, to solve a shared research question within one of the Challenge themes in smaller, collaborative centres with a unifying vision and mission.

The scientific disciplines and location is not restricted, except that the main applicant and host institution is anchored in Denmark.

Each Challenge Programme application can request funding for up to DKK 10 million over a period of 6 years, for a total of DKK 60 million.

Application proces

The application process will consist of two stages.

Stage 1: A short expression of interest will be evaluated by an expert committee. The best applicants will be invited to submit a Stage 2 application.

Stage 2: An application with a detailed project proposal. The main applicant will be invited for interview at the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

Please, read the guidelines carefully before applying.
