World-class diabetes treatment
The Foundation wants to ensure that people with diabetes in Denmark get the world’s best treatment. It also strives to prevent people from acquiring diabetes. The Foundation collaborates with Denmark’s administrative regions on nationwide initiatives.
Diabetes is one of the greatest health challenges in both Denmark and other count ries. In Denmark alone, 320,000 people or 6.5 % of a population of 5 million have diabetes, and the number is growing rapidly. Diabetes often affects weak and disadvantaged people. It is associated with reduced life expectancy and lower quality of life and can cause disabling injuries to such organs as the eyes, kidneys, heart and brain.
The Foundation is therefore collaborating with Denmark’s administrative regions in initiating the establishment of specialized Steno Diabetes Centers nationwide.
A nationwide solution
The Foundation has awarded a grant of DKK 2.945 billion (EUR 395 million) towards establishing Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen at Herlev University Hospital in the Capital Region of Denmark.
The Foundation’s Board has also approved draft vision statements on the treatment of people with diabetes for the Region of Southern Denmark and the Central Denmark Region, which cover establishing Steno Diabetes Centers in Odense and Aarhus.
Finally, the Foundation is discussing with the North Denmark Region and Region Zealand about potential support for and the implementation of diabetes treatment in these administrative regions.
