Oprindelig hed prisen Jacob E. Poulsen’s Grant. I 1986 blev forelæsningen placeret i regi af Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes. I 1996 fik den sit nuværende navn.

Prisen uddeles af en komite bestående af tre medlemmer fra Novo Nordisk Fondens Komite for Endokrinologi og Metabolisme samt formanden for Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes.
