Meet the Novo Nordisk Foundation at Folkemødet 2022

The Novo Nordisk Foundation will once again be present at Folkemødet in Bornholm, where the Foundation will lead several panel discussions on highly topical issues such as antimicrobial resistance, biosolutions, future epidemics and healthy weight and well-being among children.

At Folkemødet 2022 (the Democracy Festival of Denmark), the Foundation will focus on current and future global issues for which we are keen at finding the necessary solutions in collaboration with politicians, experts and other key actors. Come and join us.

Panel discussion: Antimicrobial resistance is described as the world’s most prolific killer – how do we solve the problem?

Time: Friday, 17 June, 12:00–13:00
Venue: Restaurant Vilhelm, Grønbechs Hotel, Vinkelstræde 2, Allinge (N7)
Description: According to The Lancet, antimicrobial resistance is today the world’s most prolific killer. In 2019, antimicrobial resistance caused about 1.3 million deaths. This figure is expected to increase to 10 million by 2050 if we do not manage the problem. This calls for action.

Panellists

  • Christel Schaldemose (Social Democrats), Member of the European Parliament and member of the MEP Interest Group on Antimicrobial Resistance
  • Tine Rikke Jørgensen, Technical Officer, Antimicrobial Resistance Division, WHO
  • Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, CEO, Novo Nordisk Foundation
  • Anne Bloch Thomsen, Medical Director, Pfizer Denmark
  • Lars Østergaard, Professor, Department of Infectious Disease, Aarhus University Hospital

Moderator: Nicolai Døllner

Panel discussion: The next pandemic: We know it is coming, but what can we expect?

Time: Friday, 17 June, 15:00–15:45
Venue: Haveteateret (outdoor theatre) near Grønbechs Hotel, Vinkelstræde 2, Allinge (N3)
Description: the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that global society can be destabilised in no time by an unknown virus that causes disease, death, fear and has major economic effects. The pandemic also highlighted the consequences of not being adequately prepared for dealing with new deadly pathogens. One thing we do know is that COVID-19 will not be the last pandemic. Furthermore, infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance are additional concerns.

Panellists:

  • Rasmus Horn Langhoff (Social Democrats), Member of the Danish Parliament, spokesperson on health and Member of the Danish Parliament’s Epidemics Committee
  • Thea Kølsen Fischer, Professor of Public Health, Viral Infections and Epidemics, University of Copenhagen
  • Henrik Ullum, CEO, Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen
  • Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, CEO, Novo Nordisk Foundation
  • Moderator: Nicolai Døllner

Panel discussion: Overweight and poor well-being among children and adolescents: How do we tackle the problem?

Time: Saturday, 18 June, 10:15–11:00
Venue: Corner of the garden by Grønbechs Hotel, Nørregade 12, Allinge (N5)
Description: Problems with overweight and poor well-being are rapidly increasing among children and adolescents. Today, more than one in eight children are overweight when they start school, and this increases to one in every five children when they leave school. This can negatively affect children’s social life and overall well-being. The individual child would never voluntarily choose a life with overweight, which can result in both physical illnesses and mental challenges well into adulthood.

Panellists

  • Karin Friis Bach (Danish Social Liberal Party), Chair, Health Care Committee, Danish Regions
  • Thomas Gyldal Petersen (Social Democrats), Mayor, Municipality of Herlev and Chair, Children and Education Committee, Local Government Denmark
  • Rasmus Kjeldahl, CEO, Børns Vilkår (Danish Children’s Rights Association)
  • Arne Astrup, Senior Project Director, Healthy Weight Center, Novo Nordisk Foundation
  • Cilius Esmann Fonvig, doctor, Chair, Committee on Obesity, Danish Paediatric Society
  • Moderator: Peter Lund Madsen

Panel discussion: The food sector in transition: Can biology drive the green transformation and create future workplaces?

Time: Saturday, 18 June, 11:30–12:30
Venue: Restaurant Vilhelm, Grønbechs Hotel, Vinkelstræde 2, Allinge (N7)
Description: Biology can provide many of the solutions to our climate challenges. This also applies to the food and agriculture sectors – two areas that require change for the sake of the climate. We are also on the brink of a global food crisis that may trigger famine and destabilisation of countries in the world’s most vulnerable regions, in turn leading to new migrant flows. Biosolutions can help to ensure sustainable development and preventing famine. What few people know, however, is that the solutions already exist. Many are even being developed in Denmark.

Panellists

  • Pernille Weiss (Conservative People’s Party), Member of the European Parliament
  • Ejner K. Holst, Deputy Chair, Danish Trade Union Confederation
  • Rolf Kjærgaard, CEO, Vækstfonden – Danish Growth Fund
  • Claus Felby, Senior Vice President, Biotech, Novo Nordisk Foundation
  • Moderator: Peter Hesseldahl, Ugebrevet Mandag Morgen
