This year, the Novo Nordisk Foundation is once again in Allinge on Bornholm with two dedicated stages – BIOscenen and BIOloungen – focusing on biosolutions that harness nature’s own tools across industries from fashion to food in a collaboration with DI Biosolutions, the Alliance for Biosolutions under the Danish Chamber of Commerce, and the European Biosolutions Coalition. On BIOscenen, discussions will span from genes to gastronomy, while at BIOloungen, we will delve into vital questions about the future of consumption.
From improvised rap about biotechnology, a European political road trip, and a contest for the best bio-burger, this year’s programme on BIOscenen and at BIOloungen is diverse and dynamic – presenting biology in an informal and relatable way.
What exactly can biosolutions achieve? And how will our ability to harness bacteria, enzymes, and fermentation reshape the way we live in the future – replacing traditional methods with sustainable alternatives? Biobased alternatives are the common denominator as we once again explore the potential within green transition, business, research, and education at this year’s Folkemødet.
With more than 50 events across BIOscenen, BIOloungen, and at Grønbechs Hotel, here is a glimpse of what will happen.
BIOsummit 2025: shaping the long-term vision
On 1 July, Denmark assumes the EU presidency, setting the stage for a pivotal discussion on Europe’s future. Ditte Brasso Sørensen from Think Tank EUROPA will lead a high-level debate featuring Morten Bødskov, Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs; Lars Sandahl Sørensen, CEO of Danish Industry; Brian Mikkelsen, CEO of the Danish Chamber of Commerce; and Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, CEO of the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Together, they will explore forward-looking solutions to strengthen Europe’s ability to act independently.
Biosolutions have potential – but is the EU ready for the BIO-revolution?
At BIOloungen, Margrethe Vestager, Chair of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and former EU Commissioner, joins Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, CEO of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, to assess Denmark’s competitiveness – and that of its bio-sector– from an EU perspective. Just how strong is Denmark in research and innovation? And where does the EU stand in comparison?
By highlighting tangible Danish biosolutions, the conversation will explore the many facets of potential, alongside the barriers and challenges faced by Denmark’s bio-industry as green innovation and sustainable solutions seek to transcend national borders.
Nature President and top researcher on biosolutions debate Denmark’s future
In the coming years, Denmark will undergo a historic transformation of its land use and agricultural production. More space will be dedicated to forests, nature, and biodiversity, and significantly improving water environments. At the same time, innovation and technological advancements must ensure that agriculture and food production become more sustainable, high-tech, and efficient.
But what will this future landscape look like? In a debate on BIOscenen, Maria Reumert Gjerding, President of the Danish Society for Nature Conservation, and Claus Felby, Vice President for Agri-Food at the Novo Nordisk Foundation, will envision a bold new map for Denmark.
On genes and gastronomy
BIOscenen will host a conversation between renowned DNA researcher Eske Willerslev and gastronomic pioneer Claus Meyer. Together with the audience, they will explore how we can move toward a more sustainable future without compromising our planet. Is the recipe for success found in bridging the gap between innovation and tradition, between modern science and heartfelt gastronomy?
It’s all about biosolutions. Explore the full BIOscenen and BIOloungen programmes here.
From supercomputer to mental health: Key agendas at Grønbechs
On Friday, 13 June, the Novo Nordisk Foundation will also host a series of debates at Grønbechs Hotel, touching topics beyond biosolutions. With some of the defining questions of our time shaping the framework, we will focus on current and future challenges:
- N9, 11.15–00: Sophie Løhde, Mads Krogsgaard, and the TV doctor discuss harmful bacteria
- N9, 12.15–00: What can Denmark’s new supercomputer do and how can it be used?
- N9, 13.15–00: The EU’s energy supply – independent, affordable, and sustainable
- N9, 14.05–14.50: Is interdisciplinary research in Denmark lacking ambition?
- N8, 15.00–00: Can stem cells cure Parkinson’s disease?
- N7, 15.00–00: Strengthening support for children and young people in mental health distress
