Promoting Development and Educational Mobility
The European School Copenhagen will be a three-line primary and lower secondary school and upper secondary school built on the former Carlsberg Brewery site in Copenhagen. The school will ultimately house 900 students attending grades 0 to 12 (N1 to S7) and is aimed at accommodating the children of employees of EU agencies and other international employees and Danes returning from abroad who work for companies and organizations in Greater Copenhagen.
The European School Copenhagen will offer a high-quality international education emphasizing language, physical activity and science.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation’s aim in awarding this grant is to make recruiting international employees easier and to promote development and educational mobility, including supporting the internationalization of the research environment in Greater Copenhagen. The Foundation also wants to support an environment in which children and adolescents can receive an international education emphasizing science at a high level.
With this grant, the Foundation is also striving to bolster the research chain by helping to discover, groom and develop new talented people within science and technology.
The Foundation’s grant will help to fund the costs of constructing specialized classrooms and the buildings for the English-language teaching line. This will enable the school to gear up as a modern educational institution teaching at the highest level. One aspect of the construction project will especially emphasize creating the latest facilities and specialized classrooms for science teaching.
The Foundation’s special one-off grant commemorates the 90th anniversary of insulin first being produced in Denmark.
Construction will start in 2013, and completion is scheduled for 2018. The European School Copenhagen is the first school of its kind in Denmark. The EU gives countries with official EU offices the option to build a European school. The City of Copenhagen, Realdania, Nordea-Fonden and the Danish Industry Foundation are also contributing to the school’s establishment.
