The aim of the project, “Continuity in crisis” is to improve access to NCD prevention, care and support for up to 124,000 crisis-affected people in Kenya. A secondary aim is to integrate NCD prevention and care in humanitarian operations of Red Cross/Red Crescent National Societies in the Region including in Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan by facilitating learning and standardization of approaches to NCD care in crisis across the Red Cross Movement based on learnings from Kenya.

In Kenya, the project targets three distinct locations with different risk profiles: urban, informal settlements in Nairobi, Kalobeyei refugee settlement, and flood and drought affected areas in Tana River and Kilifi Counties.

  • In the large urban informal settlements in Nairobi, the project focuses on building holistic urban resilience through community activities, supporting youth groups, strengthen health facilities as service points for NCD services, establish patient support groups and facilitate links to local institutions for further support to maintain a livelihood.
  • In the refugee settlement in Kalobeyei, the project aims at improving health awareness among the refugee population working through religious leaders and community health workers, strengthen the provision of NCD services at the KRCS managed health center including conducting community screening, patient support and referrals.
  • In the flood and drought affected areas, the project focuses on strengthening preparedness to disasters including training of emergency response team members, building capacity of sub-county health facilities to respond to NCD needs during disasters, as well as developing and updating an NCD household registry for easy referrals of patients

In addition to the Kenya activities, the project aims to build capacities of Nationla Red Cross Societies in Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan building on the experience from Kenya.
