The project aims to strengthen NCDs integration at primary health care level. This will be done by strengthening the capacity of the Kenya Ministry of Health (MoH) and county level health authorities in charge of health care at primary level to implement Kenya National NCD Strategic Plan 2020/1-2025/6 and build health systems capabilities. The project is implemented by the MoH, Kenya Diabetes Management and Information Centre, and Medtronic LAB and other national and international partners and builds on the outcomes of the first two phases, completed in 2009-2014 and 2016-2020, respectively.
The project aims to train more than 2,000 healthcare professionals, building capacity for over 350 health centres across more than 35 counties. More than 350 primary health care facilities will be upgraded to provide diabetes care, 2,000 health care professionals will be trained, and an estimated 120,000 diabetes patients and 200,000 hypertension patients will receive better care through the project. The project will also strengthen community level engagement, health promotion activities and screening campaigns by training 3,500 trained community health workers reaching up to 500,000 people with health awareness. The project will also support the advancement of a national NCD research agenda in Kenya through strengthened collaboration with and between leading academic institutions in the country.
By the end of the 4-year project, the project aims for 5 out of 10 patients to meet blood glucose and blood pressure targets, ensuring affordable NCD medicines are available in 80% of health facilities. With ambitious screening goals and care for those at risk, the project aims to become a model for similar programs in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.
