The Partnership for Education of Health Professionals (PEP) is a global flagship initiative to strengthening capacity of education of health professionals in cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) in India, Kenya, and East Africa.

The PEP programme was launched in Kenya in 2024 through three initial scoping projects. The projects collectively aim at strengthening the institutional capacity of medical training colleges (MTCs) to accelerate improvements in pre-service and continuous professional education of nurses and clinical officers on CMDs.

With the long-term goal to promote integration of up-to-date CMD education content in national curricula and teaching guidelines, the three initial projects focus on:

  1. Developing and rolling out 3 comprehensive baseline survey tools to identify training needs at medical training colleges
  2. Review of pre-service curriculum on CMDs and developing short in-service courses on CMDs
  3. Piloting of a CMD short course in one hub in one county with the potential for future scale up and adoption in national curricula
  4. Faculty and clinical mentors’ capacity strengthening to deliver online blended learning

The PEP Kenya projects have been developed in co-creation with local partners and in liaison with the Ministry of Health to anchor the programme in national policy priorities. All partners have been carefully selected based on their competitive advantages and the strategic role each plays in the education of health professionals with regards to education, research, and network. The partners include Ministry of Health Kenya, Amref Health Africa, Africa Population Health Research Centres (APHRC), Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), NCD Alliance Kenya, faith-based medical training institutions, affiliated to CHAK and KCCB.

An additional grant to support strengthening KMTC Karen campus as aCentre of excellence in education of dieticians and nutritionists on CMDs
