The World Diabetes Foundation was founded in 2002 as an independent foundation by Novo Nordisk A/S with a vision to enhance equity in access to diabetes care and prevention in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Since 2018, WDF has been a strategic partner to NNF on improving the strengthen access to care, reduce prevalence and advance the NCD agenda in LMICs.

The overall vision of the Partnership Programme with World Diabetes Foundation is to accelerate NCD prevention and care for vulnerable populations in LMICs with a focus on countries and vulnerable populations in East Africa, the Middle East and India. It will capitalise on WDF’s unique global and local partnership network and experience to identify projects and partners with potential for maximizing impact. Ultimately, the grant will contribute to improving NCD outcomes for vulnerable and underserved populations including people living in poverty, elderly, children with type 1 diabetes, pregnant women and, people affected by conflict and displacement.  A secondary target group includes health system actors such as health care providers and policy makers.

The Programme is structured around five thematic areas of intervention:

  1. Health Systems Strengthening: To create sustainable, resilient, and equitable health systems, which deliver high quality NCD services for the populations throughout the life course
  2. Primary Prevention: To create health promoting environments increasing the opportunities for healthy living and healthy pregnancies for vulnerable groups.
  3. NCDs in humanitarian settings: To promote and strengthen the integration of diabetes and NCD prevention and care in humanitarian response programmes to ensure continuity of care for people living with diabetes and related NCDs
  4. Type 1 Diabetes: To improve access to care for T1D patients living in LMICs.
  5. Innovative Financing: To accelerate the development and implementation of scalable solutions for prevention and access to care for diabetes patients in LMICs

Within the Partnership Programme, the Novo Nordisk Foundation and World Diabetes Foundation enter an annual strategic dialogue to agree on specific projects to be funded under each area.
