The Danish Alliance for Inclusive Refugee Response (the Alliance) is a partnership between NNF, Grundfos Foundation, LEGO Foundation, and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). The four members contribute with one or more closely coordinated projects within the health, education and/or water sectors to achieve inclusive and lasting solutions in humanitarian settings.
The Alliance aims to enhance self-reliance, resilience, and long-term stability for refugees and host communities in Turkana West Sub-County to improve access to inclusive basic social services in health, education, and water. The Alliance supports Kenya’s national and local development efforts including the Shirika Plan, Kenya’s multi-year initiative aimed at transforming refugee camps in Turkana and Garissa into integrated settlements.
The support by Novo Nordisk Foundation is dedicated to the health sector. This project is managed by UNHCR and carried out in close collaboration with Kenyan Medical Training College Lodwar, and Kenya Red Cross and International Rescue Committee, who manage the health facilities in Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei settlement. The Danish MFA runs complementary projects on mental health, health insurance fund roll-out, and capacity building of the local health authorities for health system management.
The project focuses on three main interventions:
1. Increase human resources for health through capacity building of the medical training college in the country capital, incl. through improved teaching facilities and admission of refugee students.
2. Enhance capacity of the health workforce through in-service training with a focus on priority NCDs, including hypertension and diabetes and support for the roll out of the national Community Health Strategy.
3. Improve infrastructure of health facilities, incl. solar power, water supply sanitation and hygiene and establishment of integrated NCD clinics at primary healthcare facilities with the necessary equipment for NCD diagnosis and management.
The project will lead to strengthened capacity of existing institutions and facilities in Turkana County, with the aim to advance local ownership and develop capacity of local partners.
