You are invited to join us when on Thursday, 14 October 2021 the Novo Nordisk Foundation will host a Data Science Talk – Understanding Cause and Effect Through Data Science and Novel Biomedical Data Sources.

One of the ultimate goals of science is to disentangle causes and effects. This is particularly true in biomedical science where understanding the cause(s) of a disease is key to develop a treatment and where a drug cannot be approved without fully proving that it causally improves the patient outcome.

Traditionally, the randomized trials (RCTs) have been the gold standard to establish causality. However, recent improvements in statistical methodology, data availability and data science promise to boost the knowledge on causality that can be extracted from a given data set. Such potential gains can be translated to getting drugs to patients faster, but just as well to ensure better evidence in small/neglected therapeutic areas. Simultaneously, extracting as much scientific knowledge as possible from studies involving patients is also an ethical obligation that is becoming ever more acute.

The aim of this Data Science Talk is to debate: How can we become better users of the data sets we already have? What can current data science methods do to facilitate this, and what emerging methods are coming up?

Within statistical methodology, two of the pioneers are Profs Mark van der Laan and Maya Petersen from UC Berkeley who are developing the so-called targeted learning methods. A key-component of targeted learning methods is that is builds on – and can incorporate – improvements in data science as well as richer data including high-dimensional biomarkers, images etc.

To mark that Profs Mark van der Laan and Maya Petersen from UC Berkeley will be visiting Denmark, the aim of the event is to bring them together with leading researchers from relevant subfields of data science. They will share their thoughts on state-of-the-art and where remaining obstacles are.
