Dkk 600 Million Programme for Excellent Research Leaders at All Stages of Their Careers

The Novo Nordisk Foundation is establishing a new ambitious research programme aimed at research leaders at different stages of their careers. The Foundation has earmarked DKK 600 million for the programme over the next 5 years.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation is significantly increasing the amount of funding for basic research within bioscience and basic biomedicine.

The Foundation has earmarked DKK 600 million to establish a new Research Leader Programme targeting the best and most creative research leaders at all levels. Up to 12 five-year grants of up to DKK 10 million each will be awarded annually.

The purpose of the Programme is to ensure that excellent research leaders have the opportunity to pursue ambitious and meaningful projects. The Programme will support the ongoing development of top researchers by ensuring a stable financial framework that enables the researchers to do what they do best – research.

The Programme comprises three types of grants targeting research leaders at different stages of their careers.

  • Hallas-Møller Emerging Investigator. These investigator grants target young promising research leaders to enable them to establish their own research group and profile.
  • Hallas-Møller Ascending Investigator. These investigator grants target excellent young to middle-aged associate professors to enable them to consolidate their research group and profile.
  • Distinguished Investigator. These investigator grants target professors of the highest international calibre.

“In launching the new Research Leader Programme, we want to ensure that excellent research leaders at different stages of their careers have the opportunity to pursue ambitious and relevant projects with the help of a targeted and long-term grant that will ensure focus, continuity and stability in their research,” says Niels-Henrik von Holstein-Rathlou, Head of Research and Innovation Grants, Novo Nordisk Foundation.
The Research Leader Programme expands and replaces the existing Hallas-Møller Fellowships, which was awarded annually to two young promising research leaders. Now up to 12 five-year grants of up to DKK 10 million each will be awarded annually, four in each category.

Grant applicants and their projects are required to be affiliated with a research institution in Denmark. The applicants must have a comprehensive, independent research profile and be among the best in their field and stage of their careers. The project must also be excellent and have potential for high impact.
