The Novo Nordisk Foundation is an independent Danish foundation with corporate interests. It has two purposes:

  1. to provide a stable basis for the commercial and research activities of the companies in the Novo Group: the Novo Nordisk Foundation, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Novo Holdings A/S, is the controlling shareholder of Novo Nordisk A/S and Novozymes A/S; and
  2. to support scientific, humanitarian and social causes: in 2017, the Foundation awarded grants totalling DKK 5.8 billion, primarily for research, education and innovation within biomedicine and biotechnology at universities and hospitals in Denmark and the other Nordic countries as well as diabetes treatment and prevention and humanitarian and social purposes.
