Novo Nordisk Foundation Further Increases Clinical Research Grants

14 May

In 2017, the Foundation established a new Investigator-Initiated Clinical Trials research programme. The research programme aims to boost the opportunities to carry out clinical trials in Denmark.

The Foundation received many qualified applications and awarded DKK 77.7 million in grants to nine projects – about DKK 18 million more than budgeted.

The Foundation is therefore further increasing the overall grant for the field in 2018.

“As there has been a great interest in this new programme, and to fill a gap that was not otherwise covered for this type of research, the Foundation’s Board has decided to allocate an additional DKK 20 million. This means that the Foundation will award DKK 80 million in grants in 2018,” says Niels-Henrik von Holstein-Rathlou, Head of Research and Innovation Grants, Novo Nordisk Foundation.

The programme is open for applications via the Foundation’s online application system. The submission deadline is 14:00 on Wednesday, 13 June 2018.

“Clinical trials are a key factor in improving patient care. We want to encourage specialist physicians with exciting projects to apply, and we hope to receive even more qualified applications than last year,” adds Niels-Henrik von Holstein-Rathlou.

The programme supports research that focuses on developing new treatment methods or improving existing ones. One project that received a grant under the programme in 2017 focused on investigating the best way of treating people who have had a stroke when they live very far from a treatment centre.

The programme’s name reflects the Foundation’s desire to support doctors’ own ideas and not projects initiated by the pharmaceutical industry. Projects with an industrial or commercial purpose are therefore not eligible for grants.

The programme is only open to specialist physicians at hospitals in Denmark and will award grants totalling DKK 80 million per year. Applicants may apply for grants of DKK 5 million to DKK 20 million.
