Novo Nordisk Foundation Supports Displaced Rohingyas

The Novo Nordisk Foundation has awarded a grant of DKK 50,000 to the Danish Refugee Council to enable it to distribute emergency aid boxes and to ensure shelter for even more of the hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas who have been displaced from their homes as a result of the unrest in Myanmar.

Rohingyas are a stateless and outcast ethnic minority group that mostly lives in Rakhine State in Myanmar.

Christian Friis Bach, Secretary General, Danish Refugee Council, says, ”This is a desperate situation, but I am pleased that our personnel on the ground now have the opportunity to help even more displaced children and adults.”

The grant from the Foundation will be used in refugee camps in Myanmar. The aid will be used to benefit at least 2000 people, who will receive emergency aid boxes containing such items as sleeping pads, floor mats, mosquito nets and cooking utensils. In addition, 70 toilets will be constructed to ensure better hygiene and thereby prevent epidemics of cholera and other diseases.
