Based on a competition, Team COWI A/S has been chosen to design and supervise the construction of the new Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen together with subcontractors Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects; Mikkelsen Architects; and Sted Architects.

In a press release by the Capital Region of Denmark, the assessment committee stated that the winning project proposal “has inviting architecture that provides a high-quality and attractive daily working environment. The overall design completely fulfils the vision of a building that integrates architecture, art and landscape to provide a unifying experience for patients, their families and the Center personnel.”

The Center will be constructed next to Herlev Hospital and will be completed in 2020.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation awarded a grant of DKK 2.945 billion (€396 million) to establish and operate the Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen. The vision for the Center is that it will offer world-class patient care. The new Center will bring together competencies within treatment, clinical research and education on diabetes under one roof, thereby offering better and more coherent treatment for each patient.
