The Novo Nordisk Foundation has awarded a grant of DKK 750,000 to the Youth Science Association of Denmark for holding six to eight annual ScienceCamps in 2018–2020.

Use a week of your summer holidays to study a science subject in depth along with other young people and teachers who are young students or researchers at a university.

With a fee for participants of DKK 500, this offer is accessible to interested upper-secondary students or students in their final year at lower-secondary school if they apply to attend one of the six to eight annual ScienceCamps.

The Foundation is providing DKK 250,000 annually for summer school camps over the next 3 years – DKK 750,000 in total. The grant is going to the Youth Science Association of Denmark, which is run by volunteer science students, who are responsible for organizing and implementing the ScienceCamps at universities in Denmark.

Rasmus Rahbek Østergaard, Chair, Youth Science Association of Denmark, says, “The key purpose of the ScienceCamps is to stimulate committed young people who are interested in science and technology and to do this in a way that creates social relationships between like-minded people. A summer school provides both professional challenges and the experience of meeting new friends with the same interests.”

An evaluation among previous participants at ScienceCamps showed that 81% were subsequently more interested in choosing a higher education programme, and that even more (84%) had a greater interest in working with science and technology. ScienceCamps have been held in Denmark since 2002, covering such subjects as mathematics, biotechnology, chemistry, developing video games, programming and physics.

The Foundation previously awarded DKK 75,000 for the ScienceCamps held in 2017 and has decided to continue to support the summer schools.

Dagnia Looms, Head of Strategic Awards, Novo Nordisk Foundation, says, “The Youth Science Association of Denmark ScienceCamps build bridges between upper-secondary education and science programmes in higher education and gives young people an opportunity to meet role models and identify with becoming a student. The Foundation’s grant aims to increase the interest of young people in science and technology and, in the longer term, to inspire them to choose an educational programme in these fields.”
