The situation in Ukraine is rapidly deteriorating and the humanitarian consequences on the civilian population are likely to be devastating. There have already been reports of casualties and people starting to flee their homes to seek safety.
In response, a grant totalling 5 million DKK awarded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation will assist UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to provide urgently needed relief and protection to people forced to flee their homes.
“The situation in Ukraine is tragic and it is deeply concerning to follow how the crisis is developing. With this humanitarian support we want to contribute to helping people who are affected by the military action and have been forced to flee their home to seek safety,” says Hanna Line Jakobsen, Senior Vice President, Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Responding to the emergency, UNHCR is urgently stepping up its operations and capacity in Ukraine and the neighbouring countries.
“We’re gravely concerned about the rapidly deteriorating situation in Ukraine. With thanks to this timely support from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, UNHCR can assist and protect those in need of humanitarian aid,” says Pascale Moreau, Director of UNHCR’s Regional Bureau for Europe.
UNHCR has been on the ground in Ukraine since 1994 and provides critical relief items, protection and shelter to people forced to flee. UNHCR has a broad presence across the country and implements its programmes directly, as well as with NGO partners.
