Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, which offers tailored diabetes treatment for people with diabetes, has today been proclaimed to be world leading and a role model from which other countries and healthcare systems can learn. It is the Global Coalition for Value in Healthcare of the World Economic Forum that bestowed upon Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen to be a so-called Global Innovation Hub, as they have evaluated that Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is one of the world’s most advanced and innovative initiatives, which facilitate the development towards a more coherent and effective healthcare system that create value for people with diabetes.
“The treatment we provide at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen has reduced diabetes-related blindness close to zero. Another example is that, we have reduced diabetes-related leg amputations by 80%. These are amazing results that match our vision of offering people living with diabetes, prevention and treatment at the highest international level. We strive at creating a healthcare system with a human approach, and the setup at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is a gold standard example of that, providing a framework for a good life for individuals living with a non-communicable disease. I am very proud of the recognition from the World Economic Forum, which shows that we are on the right track towards our vision for Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen,” says Chairman of the Regional Council Sophie Hæstorp Andersen.
Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is a public-private partnership between the Capital Region of Denmark and the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The Novo Nordisk Foundation has donated 0.4 billion Euro for further development of the hospital, which was established by Doctor Hans Christian Hagedorn back in 1932. With the recognition from the Forum, Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen enters a small group of world leading healthcare providers, each selected to be a showcase for the rest of the world in relation to disseminating examples of value-based healthcare with a sharp focus on creating the greatest possible value for the individual citizen.
“It is an amazing recognition of the important work being performed at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen and the other regional Steno Diabetes Centers. I hope that it will inspire others and accelerate innovation in the treatment of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases globally,” says Chairman of Board of Directors at Novo Nordisk Foundation Lars Rebien Sørensen.
Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen has been selected as one of four international initiatives that will be part of the World Economic Forum’s work over the next two years to strengthen the spread of innovative health initiatives that create value for the individual with one or more chronic diseases.
“Non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, are major challenges for populations, healthcare systems and healthcare economies globally. Accordingly, there is a global need for health systems to move towards a cross-sectoral oriented collaboration that provides more healthy life years for citizens with non-communicable diseases, a high user satisfaction, as well as new solutions that are structurally and economically sustainable.
