Kalundborg is Scandinavia’s largest bioindustrial cluster and home to more than 5,000 industrial workplaces across many of Denmark’s largest companies. However, the cluster is currently challenged by a limited influx of newly trained specialists and a lack of research infrastructure.
Helix Lab contributes to attracting new students and strengthens the collaboration between research and industry in Kalundborg. The ambition is to boost Kalundborg’s position in the bioindustrial field, thereby strengthening industry in Denmark.
Helix Lab collaborates with both national and international universities, which ensures a broad recruitment base. About 15 MSc projects are available annually for the students, who are offered a five to 12-month stay in Kalundborg that includes student accommodation and access to the research facilities of Helix Lab. The students will maintain their links with the educational institutions at which they are enrolled in an MSc programme.
The first students arrived at Helix Lab in January 2022, and the newly constructed Helix Lab facilities opened their doors in February 2022.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation has awarded DKK 65 million to fund equipment, personnel and the operation of Helix Lab over a five-year project period.
