TONY HUNTER:
PROFESSOR, THE SALK INSTITUTE FOR BIOLOGICAL STUDIES, LA JOLLA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Why are you participating in the conference?

– PTM is something I have been interested in for almost 40 years. In this meeting this is the only topic, which is clearly an incentive to come.

What has been your best experience?

– The quality of the talks has been outstanding. So have the discussions both after the talks, during the breaks, and during the meals.

What do you take home from the conference?

– I will take home about 25 pages of handwritten notes, which I will put out in the lab with the abstract book from the conference. If people see something that interests them they will ask me what I know about it. If they can’t read my handwriting they will ask me again.

MAXIM A.X. TOLLENAERE:
PHD STUDENT, THE NOVO NORDISK FOUNDATION CENTER FOR PROTEIN RESEARCH, UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

Why are you participating in the conference?

– This conference is the first time I have had the opportunity to show my work to a more international audience than only professors and people in my own group. I have had to explain my poster a lot of times, to a great number of people, and I have had some very nice feedback. It has been really satisfying.

What has been your best experience?

– To meet the experts is definitely a highlight for me. Normally you hear about someone famous within the field, someone you only know from a paper. It has been exciting to meet them – they are human too, and they all have a lot of interesting stories about their careers.

– The organizers arranged mixed seating at the dinner tables, which means that every night I have shared a table with a PI or somebody who gave a talk. Furthermore the PI Pub was great. I mean – I met Michael Yaffe there – and I really like his work.

What do you take home from the conference?

– This is my first large international conference – so the experience is important to me. Furthermore, I bring take home a new collaboration possibility and new ideas for my own project on how I can lift it to a higher level.

INÊS CHEN:

EDITOR, NATURE STRUCTURAL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY JOURNAL, UNITED STATES

Why are you participating in the conference?

– For an editor it is an ideal setting. The program is very broad, which means I can cover a lot of ground and learn about new approaches within the different fields.

What has been your best experience?

– I enjoyed learning the story about the center cluster. It is amazing how fast they are growing and how much potential there is for the future. Knowing about the cluster beforehand is a great way for me to tell where the next exciting research is being done.

– At this conference I have talked to people, expressed my journal’s interests – and I hope that when the stories are ready, the participants will send them to us.

What has the conference given you as an editor?

– As editors we always go to conferences to do this outreach. To explain our work and what each journal is about. At this conference it was nice to have a dedicated place for the people to come and ask questions (The Editors Corner).

Will you come back for the next conference about PTMs in Cell Signaling?

– Oh yes – maybe me or maybe another editor. I will definitely make sure to tell my colleagues at other nature journals about the next conference about sustainability.

CRISTINA C. SANTINI:

POSTDOC, TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DENMARK (DTU)

You also participated in the first “PTMs in Cell Signaling” conference two years ago – why did you come back?

– I am participating because it was really interesting the first time. The organizers make it easy for us participants to get to know each other both personally and scientificly. If you talk to someone you admire scientifically and at the same time make a personal connection with the person, this connection is much deeper and longer lasting.

What has been your best experience?

– I feel that the conference grows. There is a revolution from the first day and the first dinner where you start talking to the other participants. Throughout the days you start feeling closer to these people – I think we become almost like a family.

What do you take home from the conference?

– I take home a lot of excitement for the topic and about my own work – on my iPod I have a list of things I want to do with my research.

Would you like to come back for another PTM conference?

– I will probably not be working in Denmark in two years, but I would definitely fly in from the US to participate. It is the conference of the year.
